Portraits of an LGBTI+ Generation (2019-2021) was a portrait series created as part of my photographer-in-residence post with the The Coming Back Out Ball and LGBTI+ Elders Social Dance Clubs project with the National Theatre of Scotland. Pioneered by Australian arts company All the Queens Men, the project combined monthly social dance clubs for LGBTI+ elders and allies in Glasgow and Inverness, Scotland, culminating in a grand summertime Ball and exhibition of the portraits at the Glasgow Museum of Modern Art from 26 June to 29 August 2021. The dance clubs started as way to tackle the isolation and ongoing marginalisation of LGBTI+ elders and older adults in a positive, energising and community-building way, addressing the fact that the older generations often fear having to ‘return to the closet’ as they age and navigate their lives forward. Despite being the ones who truly paved the way for us and our rights as LGBTI+ people today.
The portraits are accompanied by short documentary films created during the photoshoots by filmmakers Ania Urbanowska and Graeme Rogers, which can be viewed here: https://www.nationaltheatrescotland.com/latest/portraits-of-an-lgbti-generation
The Coming Back Out Ball has been a National Theatre of Scotland and All The Queens Men co-production, in partnership with Eden Court and Luminate and in association with Glasgow City Council.
